The
Yardbirds Featuring Jimmy Page 1966 Tour Dates
June 21, 1966 - December 31, 1966
JUNE
21 - MARQUEE CLUB, LONDON, ENGLAND (start of Summer European Tour)
(TUESDAY 7:30pm-11pm)
Jimmy Page's first live performance with the band. The intent was
dualing lead guitars. Jimmy would come in on bass. Give Chris Dreja
a bit of time to learn on bass. And then Jimmy would switch to lead.
That caused of absence of Jeff Beck on some shows in the near future.
He was also a bit disappointed of the way the band goes on. So with
the progress of absence of Jeff the band ended up with only one guitar.
(Some BBC Radio session included Smokestack Lightning where Jeff Beck
plays guitar while Jimmy Page bass but detailed date is still unknown.)
Shared bill with The Clayton Squares.

Comments:
Relf is asked by an announcer between songs about the line up, and
he explains that Beck left and they are a four piece now. The highlight
of the broadcast is a long version of Im A Man with
Page playing the guitar with a violin bow and McCarthy bashing out
interesting rhythms. An announcer comes on the screen at the end speaking
in German.

Comments:
It was never heard outside the concert circuit until Epic Records
released Live Yardbirds Featuring Jimmy Page in 1971. Epic had taped
a show and when the band heard the masters several days later, they
decided that Epic should not release it as an album. By 1971, Led
Zeppelin was a colossal success and Epic obviously hoped to ride on
their coattails. The track in question was erroneously called I'm
Confused on the LP, a title the band never used. Nevertheless, Page
quickly gained a court injunction and the album was withdrawn from
the market. He cited the fact that Epic had overdubbed crowd noises
on the original tracks. Further, he was dissatisfied with the band's
original performance. Page also had the LP withdrawn in 1975.

Comments:
The set is packed with clues as to what would emerge as The New Yardbirds
and Led Zeppelin just three months later. There's Dazed And Confused
bridge at the introduction to The Train Kept A Rollin' - their opening
number was retained for the early Zeppelin tours. Then there's Dazed
And Confused itself - based on an idea from Jake Holmes, a New York
folk singer Page heard while touring, and adapted to feature the violin
bow solo that would become a Zeppelin trademark. Only the lyrics would
be changed for the version that subsequently appeared on band's debut
album. There are also several stringout improvisations on I'm A Man
and Smokestack Lightning medley built around the guitar riff that
would become How Many More Times. This would drift into playful covers
such as The Velvet Underground's Waiting For The Man, an open ended
tactic that Page would develop with Robert Plant. And there was Page's
instrumental tour de force, White Summer - the beginning of the dadgad
tuning technique that would flower into Black Mountain Side and Kashmir.
A true classic and a very representative one. Something strange happened
on the stage (a broken string?), because New York City Blues was cut
off just after as they launched to play second verse and what we can
hear next is a hint of smiling from suddenly confused audience.
