GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-01.04.1971-DVD-A-17

DVD Audio: John Peel Introduction/Immigrant Song/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree/Since I've Been Loving You/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog/Dazed And Confused/Stairway To Heaven/Going To California/That's The Way/What Is And What Should Never Be false start/What Is And What Should Never Be/Bridget The Midget speech/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. Boogie Chillun, Truckin' Little Mama, Fixin' To Die, That's Alright Mama, For What It's Worth, Mess O' The Blues, Honey Bee, The Lemon Song/Thank You/Communication Breakdown (107:53)
Recording: Superb stereo soundboard/Color pro visual artwork. Source: In Concert, Paris Cinema, London, England Apr. 1 '71. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. There have been probably more releases of the BBC 1969 and 1971 broadcasts than any other shows of Led Zeppelin. It is easy to see why, as the sound quality has always been excellent. The broadcast for the 1 April 1971 Paris Theatre concert has been put out numerous times with differing results regarding sound quality and completeness. And of course the official 2 CD "BBC Sessions" from Atlantic gave us virtually all the concert. However there were gaps and cuts, notably in the Whole Lotta Love Medley. What Genuine Masters has done is to assemble the complete concert and release it in really excellent sound quality. There is a really great sound range, from sharp and crisp high end notes, to the low end sounds, although this low end is not over-emphasized. And of course it was introduced by the late, great, John Peel. This is therefore a very welcome addition and well worth seeking out.

BONZO'S BIRTHDAY PARTY
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-31.05.1973-DVD-A-22

DVD Audio 1: Rock And Roll/Celebration Day/Bring It On Home Intro/Black Dog/Over The Hills And Far Away/Misty Mountain Hop/Since I've Been Loving You/No Quarter/The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song/Dazed And Confused medley incl. San Francisco/Stairway To Heaven/Moby Dick/Happy Birthday to Bonham/Heartbreaker/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. The Crunge, Boogie Chillun/The Ocean/Communication Breakdown (147:37)
DVD Audio 2: Rock And Roll/Celebration Day/Bring It On Home Intro/Black Dog/Over The Hills And Far Away/Misty Mountain Hop/Since I've Been Loving You/No Quarter/The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song/Dazed And Confused medley incl. San Francisco/Stairway To Heaven/Moby Dick/Happy Birthday to Bonham/Heartbreaker/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. The Crunge, Boogie Chillun/The Ocean/Communication Breakdown (146:56)
Recording: DVD Audio 1 Excellent stereo soundboard-Good to Very good mono-stereo audience/Color pro visual artwork; DVD Audio 2 Good to Very good mono-stereo audience/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Great Western Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California May 31 '73. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This 2 DVD-R set has two versions of the classic Bonzo's Birthday Party concert, one using the soundboard and an audience recording combined, and the other using three different audience recordings. The first DVD-R starts off using an excellent audience recording, which abruptly changes to the soundboard recording. The basis of this disc is to use all the available soundboard, and fill the gaps in that with one audience recording. The second DVD-R uses a combination in the main of two audience sources, a third source is only used very briefly. Usual high quality packaging and artwork, the famous William Stout birthday cake obviously being adopted. It depends if you prefer a soundboard recording over an audience recording as to whether DVD-R 1 or DVD-R 2 are your favourite. There are plenty of nice 1973 visuals in 16.9 widescreen, and a convienient menu on the DVDs. Another definitive version.

BRISBNAE BOOGIE
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-29.02.1972-DVD-A-03

DVD Audio: Immigrant Song/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog/Since I've Been Loving You/Celebration Day/Stairway To Heaven/Going To California/That's The Way (stopped)/That's The Way/Tangerine/Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp/Dazed And Confused/What Is And What Should Never Be/Moby Dick/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. Boogie Chillun, Truckin' Little Mama, The Wanderer, Hello Mary Lou, Let's Have A Party, Going Down Slow, The Shape I'm In
Recording: Fair to Good mono audience/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Festival Hall, Brisbane, Australia Feb. 29 '72. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This release from Genuine Masters has very similar lines to their "The Rover's Return" Sydney 27th February 1972, is important as it for the first time it uses the original master tapes from the concert. Previously only high generation tapes have circulated and been used in the various CD releases. This is a DVD audio, where the audience recording is accompanied by a constantly changing photo montage. The first few songs are accompanied by solarized images, but then change to colour or black & white photos. The sound quality, notwithstanding the fact that it is straight off the master (the cassettes of which appear on the DVD and the back cover of the insert), is not particularily good, but it is the best that we will get for this concert. The artwork for the DVD case is very high quality, as is the printed colour image, directly onto the DVD-R. This is another novel and very worthwhile concept.

BURN LIKE A CANDLE
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-25.02.1972-DVD-A-02

DVD Audio: Tape Drone/Immigrant Song/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree/Over The Hills And Far Away/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog/Since I've Been Loving You/Stairway To Heaven/Going To California/That's The Way/Tangerine/Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp/Dazed And Confused medley incl. Walter's Walk, The Crunge/What Is And What Should Never Be/Dancing Days/Moby Dick/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love instrumental, Boogie Chillun, Let's Have A Party, Hello Mary Lou, Heartbreak Hotel, Slow Down, Millionaire Blues, Going Down Slow, The Shape I'm In/Rock And Roll/The Ocean/Louie Louie/Organ Solo/Thank You/Communication Breakdown/Bring It On Home (190:46)
Recording: Very good mono audience/Color pro visual artwork/Color silent amateur footage taken from legit "DVD". Source: Great Western Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California June 25 '72. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This great concert from the LA Forum in 1972 has been released many times before by a number of labels. However, for one reason or another there have been some problems with all the releases. Fortunately Genuine Masters have got hold of an upgraded sound for this audience recording. Equally important, they have tracked down an alternate source audience recording of the concert too. This has been used to fill the few small cuts and gaps present in the main source. The sound now presented is excellent, although Plant's voice is still a little distorted, but that is on the original recording and little can be done regarding this. All the instruments sound really crisp and sharp. Genuine Masters have the ability to give good bottom end and also good top end too, which is very hard to achieve. Time after time listening to many releases that appear from the Land Of The Rising Sun, they give you one or the other, but never both. This is a classic concert and has now been presented in a really high quality sound and is complete. Incredibly the entire 191 minute concert has been fitted onto a single DVD, a remarkable technical achievement. The usual quality artwork on the cover, and the menu on the DVD allows easy and quick access to all the songs. This release is well worth seeking out, highly recommended.

COURT JESTERS
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-24.05.1975-DVD-A-16

DVD Audio: Nicky Horne Introduction/Rock And Roll/Sick Again/Over The Hills And Far Away/In My Time Of Dying/The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song/Kashmir/No Quarter/Tangerine/Going To California/That's The Way/Old Man tease/Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp/Trampled Underfoot medley incl. Gallows Pole/Moby Dick/Dazed And Confused medley incl. Woodstock/Stairway To Heaven/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. The Crunge, Sex Machine, Turn On Your Lovelight/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog
Recording: Superb stereo soundboard-Good to Very good mono audience/Color pro visual artwork/Color pro shot video from legit "DVD" and few bootleg movies. Source: Earl's Court Arena, London, England May 24 '75. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This concert has been released numerous times before, because of the large portion of it being available from the video soundtrack. A greatly improved picture quality video has come out on DVD, released by Empress Valley ("Heavy Metal Kids"). This latest release, incredibly having the complete (all 217 minutes and 42 seconds) concert on a single DVD-R, is an audio DVD with still images. These images have been taking from the various Earl's Court DVDs using screen captures. But it is in the sound quality that this release excels. It is razor sharp and crisp, you can hear every note crystal clear. The small gaps in the soundboard recording have been filled from the audience recording. The still images from the video are very nice, but this would have been an incredible release if the upgraded video source now available could have been used with this superb sounding soundtrack. High quality colour inserts and label, with a very good menu and quick access to each song, all add up to make this a worthy thirtieth anniversary release.

The Lemon Song, Sweet Jelly Roll/Babe I'm Gonna Leave You/White Summer medley incl. Black Mountain Side/Sittin' And Thinkin'/Dazed And Confused
Recording: Excellent stereo soundboard-Very good mono audience/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Fillmore West, San Francisco, California Apr. 27 '69. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. Many many labels have released this historic and classic last night in San Francisco in April 1969, most recently (and excellently) by Empress Valley under the title "Avocado Club". But we now have a combination of the stunning but not quite complete stereo soundboard recording, very cleverly blended with the very good audience recording in simply superb sound. Listening to the soundboard recording it is hard not to think that this is an official release. The photos presented are all of excellent quality and snippets of the Tous en Scene TV show are used too. The opening menu gives easy access to the songs on both sets. A very impressive DVD cover artwork is very clever, showing the Devil "doing a deal" with Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix is also shown on the bottom right corner. All in all a really splendid production, and this release must now be regarded as the definitive one for both sets of this concert.

Recording: Superb stereo soundboard-Good stereo audience/Color pro visual artwork/Color pro shot video from legit "DVD" and few bootleg movies. Source: Earl's Court Arena, London, England May 25 '75. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This is the second Earl's Court marathon released by Genuine Masters. Incredibly the three hour thiry eight minute concert is fitted onto 1 DVD-R, which is an amazing feat of technology. The sound is extremely good too. All the instruments are clear and punchy, with great depth from the bottom end right through to the top. Plant's vocals are better than on previous releases, they are very prominent in this mix. The illustrations used are taken from the video/DVD releases of both the 24th and 25th May, and each track has a full screen caption announcing the song's title.

DVD Audio: Rock And Roll/Sick Again/Over The Hills And Far Away/In My Time Of Dying/The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song/Kashmir/No Quarter/Trampled Underfoot/Moby Dick/Dazed And Confused medley incl. San Francisco, Walter's Walk/Stairway To Heaven/Whole Lotta Love/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree medley incl. That's Alright Mama
Recording: Superb stereo soundboard/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, New York Feb. 12 '75. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. Another installment in the ongoing series of remastered DVDs, presented by Genuine Masters. This latest production consists entirely of the superb sounding stereo soundboard recording that was originally released by Empress Valley as "Flying Circus", and took the Led Zeppelin fan community by storm. It must be criticize that this release did not fill up the small gaps in the soundboard recording with the excellent sounding audience recording available for this concert. But that is a minor point, as what we have here is a really superb sounding release, cleaned up and remastered, and it sounds better than the Empress Valley version. The entire concert has been fitted onto one DVD-R, which is a full colour picture disc. The packaging is again excellent and of high quality. The menu and slide shows are also very good but not as spectacular as many previous GM releases. The soundboard is also available on 3 CD-Rs, and they also sound superb. This is a new and novel way to present a concert and is highly recommended.

Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. (*) & (**) are special 'Eastern Eggs" bonus tracks. The third installment in the excellent Genuine Masters series of coverage of the 1972 Australia and New Zealand Tour. The source for this DVD audio is a first generation audience recording, which has been speed corrected and now sounds very pleasant indeed. Photos taken on the Australian Tour are used to very good effect once again. Each song is nicely introduced with its own title menu. As an added bonus there are two "Easter Eggs", an alternate but incomplete audience source recording from Sydney on 27 February 1972, and the Melbourne radio station 3XY interviews with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The artwork has an Old Masters painting theme, and the DVD is a full colour picture disc. It would have helped if the track listing had been given on the back cover, but that is a small gripe. Altogether another extremely worthy addition to the coverage of this groundbreaking tour.

Recording: Very good to Excellent mono-stereo audience/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Great Western Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California Sept. 4 '70. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture disc. This concert is quite rightly regarded as one of the very best in Led Zeppelin's Live career. There have been countless releases on CD by numerous labels, and it is unlikely this release will be the last. The main source is a first generation mono audience recording (the source of the classic Blimp/Trade Mark of Quality original vinyl release "Live On Blueberry Hill", the same source as used by Neutral Zone in their pioneering 2 CD release way back in 1989, also called "Live On Blueberry Hill"). The sound is wonderful, and no EQ was applied to the tape, so an incredible achievement by the intrepid taper on that early September evening in 1970 at the Forum in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles. The mono sound on this new release is very well balanced and mixed between vocals and instruments, it really is a joy to hear this concert in the very best possible sound. Each song is indexed at the beginning of the DVD Audio, and every song is nicely introduced with its title superimposed on the very famous William Stout original TMOQ vinyl cover. This is of course the famous painting entitled "Gabrielle d' Estrées And One Of Her Sisters", which is in the Louvre in Paris. However, what is particularily striking on this DVD is the use of many art images from the 14th to 16th Centuries, from English, Flemish, Italian and Dutch Masters. Who says that listening to and watching a Led Zeppelin boot DVD is not both instructive and educational! It really makes a very nice change, and is in keeping with the William Stout artwork (surely the finest boot artwork ever created, by a superb and very highly talented artist). This release is a credit to Genuine Masters, who have pioneered a most innovative and unusual way of marrying sound and image. Highly recommended.

MEMORIAL ADELAIDE
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ 19.02.1972-DVD-A-14

DVD Audio: Immigrant Song/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree/Out On The Tiles Intro/Black Dog/Since I've Been Loving You/Stairway To Heaven/Going To California/That's The Way/Tangerine/Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp/Dazed And Confused/Moby Dick/Whole Lotta Love medley incl. Boogie Chillun, Hello Mary Lou, Let's Have A Party, That's Alright Mama, Going Down Slow, The Shape I'm In (96:12)
Recording: Excellent mono audience/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Memorial Drive, Adelaide, Australia Feb. 19 '72. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. The Adelaide concert was the best recorded of all the 1972 Australian & New Zealand Tour, although it is very sadly incomplete. The valiant taper (when not having his hearing impaired), was saving tape by pausing the recording between songs. Numerous releases of this recording have appeared over the years. However this new release from Genuine Masters is an improvement in audio quality, and is sourced directly from the original master tape. The sound on "Memorial Adelaide" is really excellent. Not only is there a very punchy bottom end, but there is a good and discernible top end sound too. This is very difficult to achieve, as usually you can have either one or the other, but not both. All the instruments are well balanced and each one is distinctive. You can clearly hear Jonesy's bass and Jimmy's lead guitar, backed by the superb precision and powerful drumming of Bonzo. Plant's voice is pretty well dealt with too, this was an outside venue and his voice occasionally got buried in the mix of the instruments. However on this version everything is well balanced and very clear indeed. There is a nice opening menu, with all the songs indexed and quickly accessible, and the visuals again use a lot of photos from the 1972 Australian Tour, and also from the 1972 US Tour. A high quality colour printed DVD case insert, and attractive 'tie dye' motif disc printed directly onto it, add up to make this possibly the best release from Genuine masters to date.

MYSTIC SAN DIEGO
GENUINE MASTERS GM-LZ-14.03.1975-DVD-A-11

DVD Audio: Rock And Roll/Sick Again/Over The Hills And Far Away/In My Time Of Dying/The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song/Kashmir/No Quarter/Trampled Underfoot/Moby Dick/Dazed And Confused medley incl. Woodstock/Stairway To Heaven/Heartbreaker medley incl. Bouree (174:14)
Recording: Superb stereo soundboard/Color pro visual artwork. Source: Sports Arena, San Diego, California Mar. 14 '75. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This release from Genuine Masters is the same soundboard source that was released last year by Empress Valley. However the source for this release is stated to be an upgraded sound quality tape to the one that Empress Valley used. A comparison between the two titles leads to think that there is no audible difference in sound quality/generation between these two releases. The diference lies in the way in which the source tape has been treated by these respective outfits. The Empress Valley version is very loud and punchy, whilst the Genuine Masters version has a more natural sound that is closer to the original. Having said that, Empress Valley's "Conspiracy Theory" remains an extremely important and significant release, a new soundboard for a completely unknown concert date in 1975. The audio on this Genuine Masters release is neatly contained on a single DVD-R, nicely screen printed, and the DVD case artwork is of a very high standard and print quality as well. Emphasis in the visuals on the DVD are on the 'mystic' with swirling colour artwork, and each song is easily accessible by way of a very good menu. There is also an option to have the audio on CD-Rs.

Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. The Empress Valley release "Florida Sunshine" (in both 2 and 4 CD guises) was an extremely important one when it came out at the start of 2003. Two years later Genuine Masters brings out their version of the SBD/AUD matrix, on a single DVDR-Audio. The sound on this release is more 'natural', ie. the sources have not been EQ'd to the extent that Empress Valley like to do it. The screen printed disc is in full colour, as is the very attractive DVD case insert. The opening menu gives easy and quick access to all the songs. The images used come from 1971 and early 1972, having a psychedelic or solarized theme to many of them.

Recording: Excellent stereo soundboard/Color pro visual artwork. Tracks 1-7 were taken from raw master tape, tracks 8-14 from vinyl. Source: Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar. 21 '70. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. In this release, GM used both the rare "tape before broadcast" and the more famous vinyl source. In both of the two versions, GM elected to put the songs in the order of the original broadcast, rather than reconstructing them, as House Of Elrond label did, in the right order in which they were actually played at the show. We may take it as something indicating GM's respect for the original sources. Even with the magic hands of GM, the tape before broadcast is still somewhat muffled, not well balanced and generally does not sound as good as we might naturally expect it should, assuming that it's the first generation tape recorded for broadcasting. Actually, it's very strange... However, a good thing about this tape is its cleanness not suffering from needle scratch noises which inevitably exist in the vinyl source version. On the other hand, the sound of the vinyl source as featured in this release is brighter, more lively and better balanced than the tape source version. Thus, it's truly a joy to listen to this vinyl version and enjoy the band's excellent performances in its earlier days in a soundboard quality as further refined and enhanced by GM. In addition, GM used the wide 16.9 image format for the first time for this title. With this format, there's no need to contract the size of the screen of any portable DVD player to its smaller "normal" size.

Picture discs. (*) (**)special bonus tracks. Sound quality is excellent. This is coupled with some great photo images, which constantly change every few seconds. It certainly looks like a revolutionary and most interesting project, and makes a nice change that somebody has taken a lot of time and trouble to come up with something different. The compatibility issues with NTSC & PAL have been sorted out, by authoring two complete master DVD projects, one in NTSC and one in PAL format. This project is clearly one that has required a tremendous amount of time and effort, coupled with a very high degree of technical proficiency in this very complicated and one might say revolutionary production. There is also the option to have the complete audience recording from the master cassettes (120 mins Agfa and BASFs), on two CD-R's, which is a very worthwhile. There are three very nice bonus DVD tracks: the 8mm cine footage of the band arriving at the venue (with audio sound overdubbed), the ABC GTK TV show, and the cocktail party. The cover artwork is extremely well presented and printed. This is a really exciting and worthwhile addition to the Led Zeppelin Live catalogue.

Source: Texas International Pop Festival, International Speedway, Festival Field, Lewisville nr. Dallas, Texas Aug. 31 '69. Comments: Australian bootleg. Deluxe standard DVD case. Picture discs. This release brings together for the first time the soundboard tape source and the video soundtrack source, with the very good audience recording used to fill the gaps in both the sources. The sound quality for the stereo soundboard (with the audience tape to fill the cuts), is extremely good. It has not however been heavily EQ'd to bring up the bottom end, but has a very clear, natural sound. This new release from Genuine Masters is the longest ever for the video/audience combo (more than a minute more than the Empress Valley version), and again has a very sharp, natural sound. It has better instrumental separation than the soundboard source, noticeable in the drums of John Bonham. Visually this release is also a gem, there is a tremendous late 1960s psychedelic feel to all the graphics and visuals. A wonderful array of colours, perhaps one should smoke a 'strong' cigarette before watching this DVD! The cover art is again of very high quality, a great photo of Plant, and the screen printed disc is also a treat for the eyes. This is an extremely worthwhile presentation of the two stereo soundboard/video sources. But oh to have the video footage from which the audio was sourced, now that would be magical!
