Recording: Superb stereo audience. CD-R1 Jameskg remaster; CD-R2 raw tape. Source: Fillmore West, San Francisco, California Apr. 24 '69. Comments: Deluxe jewel case. Small Fish original releasing notes: This is as close as you'll ever get the high speed reel master source. AJD owns the original PCM transfer from those reels and the reels have since been destroyed by fire. This originally came from Bill Graham's vault. The original PCM is the now definitive source, but was not widely circulating until now. This is the most complete tape circulated in this quality to date. PCM was used before DAT machines were invented and were the first means of digital recording. An A/D signal converter was used to to encode analog audio from tape reels to (Sony recommended) BETAMAX tapes in a standard BETA machine. A PCM encoder, coupled to a VCR, enables you to record digital audio as if it was an ordinary video signal. The device also extracts the digital audio message from the video signal, the other way round, for playback. This PCM was likely made with either the PCM-1 (1977) or the PCM-F1 (1981). What you are receiving is a direct digital transfer done by the owner of the PCM recording, AJD, a professional audio guru. The PCM machine used for the transfer is a SONY PCM-601ESD, originally sold in 1984-1985. The PCM-601ESD had the important advantages of S/PDIF digital I/O and adjustable tracking and VCR head-matching circuits and was the best digital storage technology available at the time. These units are pretty hard to come by these days. I took his transfer and mastered it for release, then encoded to FLAC8. Notice it it not a "remaster" since was never actually mastered, just transferred from old media to new as the technology progressed. For those who would ask: This is better quality than "Blues Anytime" from Empress Valley Supreme Disc. The tape is more complete and the audio quality is at least a generation cleaner, if not two. The stereo separation is much better on this transfer than whatever EVSD used. The first few notes on Babe I'm Gonna Leave You have obviously been spliced in by EVSD from a distorted source (probably not even the same date) and do not exist on the master PCM. This is more complete and better quality than the original "Dancing Avocado". When I put that one out, the source I was given had been through more DAT and CDR gens.

There are many many jumps and skips on "Since I've Been Loving You" which were on the original CD-Rs sent to the guy, who produced this album, so he had to cut those out sadly, as they are digital errors, there was no way he could get another one, the first CD-R was not packaged properly, but the other two were, so you should find no clicks or jumps of any kind on the other CD-Rs.

Recording: Excellent stereo soundboard/Good mono audience. Source: Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland May 26 '77. Comments: Deluxe jewel case. In association with A Slumpy Matrix Production. There were numerous cuts, snips and dropouts between and during songs on both sources but the producer of this release tried to maintain the full length of the show by using the longest parts as a guide in each case. There are a few missing parts in the soundboard source (taken from "Bringing The House Down" by Empress Valley Supreme Disc) which had been filled with another audience source( taken from "Landover" by Electric Magic), which the producer left as untouched as possible, just trying to make those parts listenable. The audience source had a bad case of fluttering a lot of the way through, making it sound like the chopper squad were dropping in a lot of the time - the producer tried to eliminate this but had to settle on a compromise in some cases, or the ambience of the audience source would have been lost. As producer wrote, the audience source was also very loud in the crowd, and rather than lose everything by trying to reduce it, it made more sense to my ears to leave it loud, putting you somewhere around row 20th so this caused the album's title.

Recording: Very good mono audience. Source: Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York Sept. 19 '70 evening show. Comments: Deluxe jewel case. A Presence Production in association with DarthDisc. Presence writes: As Darth9neo (the original taper) stated, earlier this year we discussed doing a new transfer of his open reel source. While that did not come to pass, we subsequently learned that the discs used for the initial release were at least two CD generations away from the shelf masters and that during these generations is when the index boundary errors and other clicks were introduced. While I managed to do a pretty good job cleaning those up for my initial "Presence version" it was difficult to do and left several repair artifacts that could just not be cleaned up. After that release Eddie Edwards pointed out that the pitch needed correction, thus "Born To Please" came about. The shelf master discs are largely free and clear from the clicks and pops found before. There were about three sector boundary errors, but these were generated by splitting tracks in SoundForge and thus are easily restored. For this release I also used parametric equalizing to lower the 250Hz frequency, the hollow reverb of the auditorium, ever so slightly, just enough to allow the other instruments to come through. I then applied a pitch correction of +1.5%, but not to the entire source. Some sections of the tape were at the correct pitch, but most was not. I also cleaned up the source a bit by trying to remove some of the crackle. All in all, it turned out very nice and I hope everyone enjoys it as it is arguably one of the best shows Led Zeppelin ever turned out.
