Comments: The first show of 1979 and the first ever live performances of Hot Dog and In The Evening, this show is very good. Robert is a little hoarse and seems almost shy but good nonetheless, and except for a messed up solo in Misty Mountain Hop, Page's playing is fluid, fast, and wonderful! Bonham and Jones, as usual, sound fine. A curious set list that is very refreshing and the angry solo in Achilles Last Stand is a highlight. Problems with a power generation delayed the show. Band's lightning rig was too big for venue and a generation had blowed up.

Comments: In some spots, this show is better than the previous week's, especially in the beginning, which has much energy. But as it progresses it gets sloppy and tentative. Ten Years Gone starts beautifully but progresses to sound hesitant and downright messy. In fact there were some problems with Jones' effect pedals prior to that song. Achilles Last Stand is strong and powerful, as is In The Evening, but Stairway To Heaven sounds rushed, tired, and unenthusiastic. The encore of Whole Lotta Love features a refreshing new arrangement but this concert is filled with contradictions.

Led Zeppelin United Kingdom Return - Knebworth Festival
August 4, 1979 - August 11, 1979

AUGUST 4 - KNEBWORTH FESTIVAL, STEVENAGE, UNITED KINGDOM (SATURDAY, start at 11am and Led Zeppelin took the stage at 11pm)
Whole concert was professionally recorded and filmed.
Billed with many other artists and headlined. Ten Years Gone was used for promo action of "Remasters" compilation in late 1990 and were broadcasted by MTV station on special "Whole Lotta Led" weekend program also in late 1990. Pro shot fragments were also used on "Over The Hills And Far Away" (late 1990) and "Whole Lotta Love" (1997) promo videos. Finally, bootleg film and some of pro shot video were used on DVD in 2003.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..), [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Almost complete very good to excellent 1st audience recording. Almost 177 minutes.
Details: The audience tape for this release is well defined, with very little tape hiss. It is very close to the monitors on one side of the stage. The instruments are clear but because of equipment limitations, the sound is kinda flat and bottom line is distorted a bit.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter [ cut ], Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..), [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Incomplete very good 2nd audience recording. Almost 176 minutes.
Details: Albeit being recorded just right of center, and about 100 yards back, this source here is distant and somewhat muffled. This recording is lacking dynamics significantly more than above tape so the sound is more flat on this one. The audience chat is evident but not too bothersome

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop [ cut ], [ cut ], Since I’ve Been Loving You, No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..).
Source: Incomplete very good 3rd audience recording. 175 minutes.
Details: A very good sounding and clear tape that lacks some of its bottom end and favours guitar in the mix. Taped not so far from the stage, it reveals a fair balance of instruments but there are some issues from noisy members of the audience, whose interruptions on actual music are annoying.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, [ cut ], Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..), [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Incomplete very good to excellent 4th audience recording. 178 minutes.
Details: This is excellent sounding tape recorded much close to the stage. It stands the same quality as the first source and the only difference is fact that bottom end isn't as well defined and because this source is a bit heavy on a mid range. The balance is great and recording itslef is very clear.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You [ cut ], [ cut ], No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song [ cut ], [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..), Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..).
Source: Incomplete very good 5th audience recording. 179 minutes.
Details: This source is lacking bass and the drums sound tiny. The recording is also a bit shrill to the ears and is a bit more distant when compared with above sources. Few annoying "sit downs" from the audience can be heard also, especially at the start of the show.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir [ cut ], [ cut ], Achilles Last Stand [ cut ], [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..) [ cut ], [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Incomplete good to very good 6th audience recording. 110 minutes.
Details: Another more distant recording, this time also heavily muffled and lacks the clarity for most of its length. Overall, a mediocre sounding and worst of all sources available for this date.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..). [ cut ], Heartbreaker [ cut ].
Source: Incomplete very good 7th audience recording. 167 minutes.
Details: Fairly clear but tiny sounding tape recorded from some distance. Because of its nature, the dynamics aren't great here but all the instruments are captured in a good balance. Again, the rowdy audience is much listenable throughout.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) [ cut ] >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, Rock And Roll, You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..) [ cut ], [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Incomplete excellent soundboard recording. 197 minutes.
Details: The recording is a very well balanced professional video soundtrack.

Recording Includes: Miscellaneous scenes (shots of fans arriving at the campsite, fans dancing to the support bands, cut into darkness just before Led Zeppelin's performance etc.), The Song Remains The Same, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, Kashmir [ cut throughout ].
Source: Incomplete 8mm silent color 1st amateur footage. 7 minutes.
Details: Shot from distance, wide angle featuring the whole stage and the giant screen. Most of copies circulated are synched up with existing audios. However, there's a chance that original film is recorded with actual sound. The LZ Official YouTube channel version has interview synched up with non-musical content.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same, Hot Dog, Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, Rock And Roll [ cut throughout ].
Source: Incomplete 8mm silent color 2nd amateur footage. 1 minute.
Details: Shot from distance, wide angle featuring the whole stage and giant screen. The official DVD used a few snippets of this clip to "enhance" the edit of its Knebworth section. Some also appear in the song selection menu. Some copies are synched up with existing audios.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, Hot Dog, The Rain Song [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountiain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, Rock And Roll, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love..) [ cut ], Heartbreaker.
Source: Almost complete color professional footage. 193 minutes.
Details: Shot to feed the large screens. The seven tracks included in the official DVD feature a different camera edit than the bootlegs.

Comments: A pretty good show but nothing compared to the standards Zeppelin had set in the past. The first 45 minutes or so sound good and strong, and Ten Years Gone is very pretty, but towards the middle section, the individual performances, though good, don't quite gel into a good ensemble performance. "Well, it's nice to see you again" said Plant to the audience at the beginning of the show, in fact they not played in the United Kingdom for the last four years! The crowd roared. Achilles Last Stand is aggressive and In The Evening is intense, but Stairway To Heaven sounds timid and tired ... Robert's introduction is so lackluster it is obvious he didn't want to play it. The encores are energetic and good, and Whole Lotta Love features the new arrangement first tried in Copenhagen in July. A short Heartbreaker finishes the event. After the last note, Plant said: "All you people that have come so far. It's been kinda like a blind date. Thanks for eleven years!"

AUGUST 11 - KNEBWORTH FESTIVAL, STEVENAGE, UNITED KINGDOM (SATURDAY, start at 11am)
Whole concert was professionally recorded and filmed. Billed with amny other artists and headlined. Hot Dog and Kashmir were used for promo action of "Remasters" compilation in late 1990 and was broadcasted by MTV station on special "Whole Lotta Led" weekend program also in late 1990. Pro shot video fragments were also used on "Over The Hills And Far Away" (late 1990) and "Whole Lotta Love" (1997) promo videos. Finally, bootleg film and some of pro shot video were used on DVD in 2003.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements [ cut ], The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), [ cut ], Communication Breakdown.
Source: Almost complete excellent 1st audience recording. 146 minutes.
Details: This is well balanced source recorded much close to the stage with a great atmosphere captured. No dostortion, great clarity. The bottom line could be better defined though as sounds a bit thin.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, [ cut ], Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, [ cut ], Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], Black Mountain Side [ cut ] >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, [ cut ], Sick Again, [ cut ], Achilles Last Stand [ cut ], [ cut ], Guitar Solo [ cut ] >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven [ cut ], [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love [ cut ].
Source: Incomplete good to very good 2nd audience recording. 118 minutes.
Details: A flat and somewhat distant recording with just mediocre dynamics as bottom end is very thin sounding. Noisy crowd and at times and some microphone noise too but this is still quite listenable tape. It capturing the atmosphere well - you can feel you are sitting on the ground while listening to the band.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same [ cut ] >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, [ cut ], Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, [ cut ], Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven.
Source: Incomplete very good 3rd audience recording. Almost 93 minutes.
Details: The tape is a bit distant but still very listenable too except for more muffled portions in latter section. The real drawback here is mid range, which is kinda shrill to ears. Some small distortion is also included.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side [ cut ]..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), [ cut ], Communication Breakdown.
Source: Inomplete very good to excellent 4th audience recording. 140 minutes.
Details: The recorder is near to the stage and the instruments are clear. Its sound is dynamic and there is very little tape hiss. But there are problems with the balance wandering in places.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements [ cut ], The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, No Quarter, [ cut ], Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, [ cut ], Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Almost complete very good 5th audience recording. Almost 153 minutes.
Details: A somewhat distant but dynamic tape, with a strong bottom end. It might reveals more clarity though as higher notes are kinda muffled. Some audience members are talktative in places.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, No Quarter, [ cut ], Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Almost complete very good 6th audience recording. 149 minutes.
Details: Another distant tape, this time with much less clarity throughout. The sound is a bit boomy here and sometimes it gets blurred a little bit. A kind of unpleasant frequency in the mid range is here.

Recording Includes: Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, [ cut ], Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Incomplete very good to excellent 7th audience recording. Almost 81 minutes.
Details: A really good sounding and clear source with just a very small distortion due to volume. The audience is pushed at the back a bit because the tape is recorded much close to the stage.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements [ cut ], The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, [ cut ], White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Almost complete good to very good 8th audience recording. 151 minutes.
Details: This tape is recorded from the back of the field, thus it shares a serious distance and sound lacks dynamics significantly. Surprisingly the audience isn't very loud except for occasional shouts and distortion is not the main factor here.

Recording Includes: The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven, [ cut ], Rock And Roll, [ cut ], Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Almost ccomplete good to very good 9th audience recording. 149 minutes.
Details: A significantly clear for most of its time and upfront taped source except for last three songs, where the quality deteriorates much. It has a nicely increased bottom end but there is some kind of distortion throughout the whole show, likely due to fact the tape is recorded with the wrong azimuth settings.

Recording Includes: Kashmir [ cut ], [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot [ cut ], [ cut ], Sick Again [ cut ], [ cut ], Achilles Last Stand [ cut ], [ cut ], In The Evening [ cut ], [ cut ], Stairway To Heaven [ cut ].
Source: Incomplete very good 10th audience recording. Near 43 minutes.
Details: A fairly clear but a bit distant tape. The volume fluctuates on both channels in places on the first half of recording makes this source a bit less enjoyable so the cuts between every song too.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements [ cut ], The Song Remains The Same, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I’ve Been Loving You, [ cut ], No Quarter [ cut ], Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, [ cut ], Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achillies Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening [ cut ].
Source: Incomplete good to very good 11th audience recording. Near 118 minutes.
Details: Another bit distant but fairly clear source. Some spots of the tape are worse than the majority and it becomes boomy at various points. After the last cut, the sound quality drops and teeters dangerously close to being an inaudible sludge of sound until the end. Audience comments by the recorder can be heard between songs including the taper speaking in Japanese.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements, The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, [ long audience anticipation ], Rock And Roll, You'll Never Walk Alone tease, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.
Source: Complete excellent soundboard recording. 160 minutes.
Details: The recording is a very well balanced professional video soundtrack.

Recording Includes: Black Dog, Kashmir, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo, In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, Rock And Roll [ cut throughout ].
Source: Incomplete 8mm silent color 1st amateur footage. Near 6 minutes.
Details: Shot from large distance, the picture isn't too sharp. Most of copies circulated are synched up with existing audios. However, there's a chance that original film is recorded with actual sound. Originally, last two songs are at the start on all circulating copies probably because the second reel was transfered before the first one.

Recording Includes: Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Achilles Last Stand, Stairway To Heaven, Whole Lotta Love [ cut throughout ].
Source: Incomplete 8mm silent color 2nd amateur footage. 4 minutes.
Details: Shows shots of the crowd before the show as well as the band performing. Some copies are synched up wuth board tape. Circulating as mix of this and ortmund June 17th, 1980 show as both were taped and transffered by the same person.

Recording Includes: Band Announcements, The Song Remains The Same >> Celebration Day, Out On The Tiles Intro >> Black Dog, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Hot Dog, The Rain Song, White Summer (<< Black Mountain Side..) >> Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, Sick Again, Achilles Last Stand, Guitar Solo >> Drum Solo >> In The Evening, Stairway To Heaven, Rock And Roll, Whole Lotta Love (<< Woman You Need Love, Boogie Chillun..), Communication Breakdown.

Comments: Not as good as the first week and also a little more tension in the air. Some songs sound very sloppy, almost like the band doesn't want to be there, but then again, some sound excellent. The opening 45 minutes or so sound strong and good, but the intensity starts to flag towards the end. Jimmy butchers the solo in Whole Lotta Love, and the end encores sound tired ("Can you do the dinosaur rock?" reflected what the band thought playing these old tunes). This was also the last concert in the United Kingdom but Robert, before as he left the stage, said: "We'll see you soon. Very soon. Don't know about the Marquee, but somewhere soon." They couldn't knew what happened a year later. Some problems with Page's guitar and PA system truncated Over The Hills And Far Away and Misty Mountain Hop.
